For the moment, I am offering for free public use a TeamTalk server. Anyone can connect to the server and use it if they desire, as the default user account does not have any username or password. If bandwidth on this server is abused however, I may either consider taking it down, or limiting what the user account is allowed to do.
The entire message of the day
The full message of the day will not fit on the server. Thus, I am placing it here for reference.
Welcome to the public hangout server! Please keep the following information in mind:
- First and foremost, no activity of any kind is logged on this server, ever. This includes any user information, IP addresses, conversations, audio transmission between users, etc.
- The server is kept up to date via the latest release of TeamTalk. Updates are usually performed early in the morning (mountain timezone), and if a restart is required, the server will likely be off line for only a minute, at most.
- There are only a few channels that are permanent and not password protected. Temporary channel creation is permitted. The root channel has audio transmission disabled.
- Remote desktop access and file sharing are disabled.
- There is and will only be one administrator account on the server for initial setup and the occasional checkin. Users are required and expected to administrate themselves and their own channels. For instance, if you do not want users to enter your channel uninvited, password protect it.
- This server is not guaranteed to remain online, though if it isn't abused, there is no reason to take it offline, as it will start when the VPS starts with no other intervention. However, if excessive bandwidth is being used, the server may be shut down.
How to connect
To connect to the server, you can click here or use the following information:
- Host: tt.vrnw.org
- Ports (TCP and UDP): 10000
- Encryption: no
- Username and password field is blank.
How did this start
This began when I wanted to see if I could publish a server to the unofficial servers list accessible within TeamTalk itself. I succeeded, and then I promptly forgot about the server. That means no bandwidth has been abused and everything is running perfectly. Restarts and updates have not prevented the server from being on the unofficial list, though it hasn't had too much activity.
Are there any rules beyond those stated above
No. I don't manage this server beyond setting it up and ensuring it will run. I don't monitor this server for any activity, I keep no logs as I stated, and unless anyone tells me otherwise, I'll just assume the server is being used for its intended purpose, a public place to hang out.
What about permanent channels
I have no plans to make any channels beyond those I create permanent. If you want a permanent channel for you and your friends, you'll have to private message me as the administrator if I check in while you're connected. I don't have a regular schedule for checking in, and there's no way within TeamTalk for an account to receive message upon connection to the server.
I want stereo audio
Temporary channels are provided mono audio by default, such as if you join with your client and are connected to the channel, with you as the first user and the channel being created upon connection. Unfortunately, you cannot change the audio codec of a channel while you are within that channel, so you'll have to leave the channel and recreate it with the appropriate audio codec settings that you like.
Joining a channel
You can join your temporary or permanent channel by placing the channel path and channel password within the appropriate fields in your server information for TeamTalk, if you have saved this server as one within your own local server list.
Can I distribute this server information to others
Of course. There are multiple options. You can share a link to the server, generate a tt file, or simply provide people with the link to this page. Sharing a link and generating a tt file is available even if you've connected to the server via the unofficial public servers list.
